I'm upgrading my earphones so if anyone is interested in a higher end set of earphones, mine are available. I sanitize them everytime after use with alcohol so don't be such a hypochondriac.

Plus they're $200 earphones that I'm essentially giving away so let me know.

You can have them for free JT.. I have all the tips/filters and original box somewhere... it's just packed up still. right now the triple flanges are on. The bass is great if you actually put them in properly.

I'm not shelling out $1500 for a set of UE. Right now, I'm finalizing between the Shure SE535's or the Phonak Audeo PFE232's. I considered the AKG 3003's but again, $1000+ is just too much.

UE makes earphones starting at $60. I highly doubt he got the UE900's or the pro series (which is what I was looking into). If he did, he definitely would have called me to show them to me by now. Hmm... maybe I'll give him a call anyways. But honestly, the UE900's got trounced by both the PFE232's and the SE535's. I'd be looking at getting a set of UE 7 Pro Customs to compete, and I doubt he can get me a custom molded set for a discount let alone for free.

Have you EVER listened to really good earphones with a good outboard DAC. (I'm using a Dragonfly) Actually, these are so good that even without an outboard DAC, a tone deaf neanderthal can hear that it's night and day. I listen to mostly classical / instrumental and vocal jazz on airplanes where it makes a huge difference. But really, unless you've listened to them, you don't have ANY news to tell me.

It's all about user expericence isn't it? I liken it to all the BB and the fine dining threads. Some may not see value in it, but I do.

That being said, I'll make you a wager. Before I even open my new set, I'll bring them over to you. You can plug it into your player of choice, or if you like, i'll bring over my dragonfly. If you can HONESTLY tell me that they are not 20x better than whatever crappy set you're using now, I'll take every regular member of this forum out to the Keg for dinner.
Heck, if I had to quantify it, I think that they're 20x better than my Etymotics right now, which are already 5x better than the pathetic apple ones.

Better yet, come with me to the headphone bar when I do my final comparison to decide which one to buy. Have a listen to the AKG's. They'll make a believer out of you.

no, you misunderstand, i know that quality headphones are just that, quality. however, my point is that there is a difference from where the sound is coming from. if you're listening to a downloaded 128mps mp3, it'll still make a difference from the earbuds you get on an ipod and a $100 pair of headphones. but the source itself isn't good enough to make a huge difference between a $100 pair over a $1000 pair. anything is better than the stock ipod earbuds (however i never tried the new earpods or whatever they're called), but i'm just saying that depending on source, $1000 would be wasted when you can just use a $100 pair that would make the 128mps mp3 sound just as good.

it's like the whole beats by dre debate. everyone thinks they're bomb because they're $200+, but you can get the same kind of sound reproduction from a sub $100 pair.

if you were listening to a cd off a quality player, or even good vinyl, or maybe an extremely high bitrate mp3 (lossless), then i'd say a $1k pair would be worth it. but i don't know what you're using, which is why i asked. even every ipod would be different as their sound processors are different from generation to generation and model to model.

and yes, i have listened to really good earphones. i've had numerous dj friends, music major friends and pseudo producer friends that were all about music and quality of sound (i.e. not casual listening) and they all hate ipods (actually, they all hated mp3's until recently). heck, even my brother-in-law has a home studio for cutting tracks.
