OBD II Tool at Canadian Tire for $59

it's actually on sale for 59.99.. which isn't bad... maybe i'll consider picking one up... but i've read that vws are picky when it comes to compatibility with obd II readers

reading the codes is one thing, actually doing something about the codes is another.
dunc, if you wanted a VAG com (obd2 reader program and cable) for the jetta i've seen some go for under $100 on vortex. all you need is a laptop. most shops will do it for free though.
