Joel's Goals

Time to get serious about a better lifestyle

Re: Joel's Goals

so doing 3 runs a week and 3 games of hockey a week. maybe 1 or 2 sessions biking... knees are really taking a beating. my operated knee is sore a lot. i should probably be icing it regularly after activities but am too lazy.

in terms of weight loss i think i am still sitting around 175.

been cheating on diet quite a bit lately, since i started playing hockey again... just find that i get really hungry now.

i think i need to do a couple things differently. Probably need to get back to a more strict sub 2000cal diet again. I think I need to re-introduce some resistance work to my exercise.

Do you know if it's the running or if it's the hockey that's causing your knee pain? Did you get better running shoes? It kinda seems to me you jumped into this with a gusto. Your joints may simply need more recovery time between activities.

it's probably both...

i have crap for running shoes... the lead at the clinic regularly lectures me about it... lol...

unfortunately due to schedule some days i have 2 hockey games on the same day or a run and a hockey game on the same day.

I'd suggest getting new shoes as well and only using them for running. I've found that wearing the proper shoes makes a big difference. So did Vince.

proper shoes make a difference even for walking too. it's worth it to get them. take it from a guy who regularly has 10+ pairs of shoes for different occasions.

yeah joyce and I will probably go for a fitting just to try it out and see what the sales person says, especially since we have those clinic coupons... but the price tag is pretty hefty 120-200$?!?!

yeah i have "permo-" shin splints on my left leg too since I have been running too... i am sure proper shoes would probably help with that.

Proper shoes definitely helped my shin splints. I know it's the shoes and not my adaptation 'cause after about 700-800 km in a pair, I start to get shin splints again.

Shin splints can actually become a big deal. Over time they can result in stress fractures.

I'm sure you can get something in the lower range that would work well. You're looking for training shoes, not racing shoes. ... and that's why I suggest only using them for running.

i hear new balance is a good brand for running, however i'm not a runner so i don't know for sure (but i do have a few pairs of new balance shoes, my current indoor shoe is new balance and i haven't had a problem).

for joyce, she should stay away from adidas, puma (awful for sports), and nike as they don't make shoes for women's feet. they just shrink their guy's shoes and put girl colours on. for girls, i hear again it's new balance ftw.

and they're cheap too, usually under $80. at the same time, i wouldn't cheap out on shoes that you'd use for this. especially if you have a messed up knee/leg/shin/body.

So exactly one year later, and I am starting up again with goals and an attempt to stick as strictly as possible to my plan. My hockey season hasn't gotten off to the start I was hoping. Some of that's just lack of skill though and not necessarily my fitness level.

I update my first post with new goals/targets.

how do you find the burnaby/new west - club 16? is it pretty crowded there?
