i think we took something just under 2hrs... we took it very easy and had several breaks throughout. my knee felt fine the whole way though.

i actually wanted to get into hiking. been to the grind once i think and the chief once or twice, i don't remember. i'd prefer the chief as the payoff is a lot better than the grind, but the chief is probably an all day thing, which i wouldn't be able to afford.

the view at the top of the chief trumps the view at the top of the grind by a gazillionfold. and the chief is a lot more fun to do as well. whereas the grind is just stairs, the chief has a bunch of other things to deal with too.

i suppose that's why the grind is called the "grind"... i think for the people who do the grind, the payoff is completing the grueling task itself. i don't think it was meant to be a leisure hike, so people who do it are doing it to test their intestinal fortitude. I assume Joel's doing the grind as a fitness/health check.

It really depends on what your purpose is when you do either the chief or the grind. Personally, i'd do both for different reasons. Grind for fitness reasons, Chief for family reasons. I think the payoff is the same, but it pays in different currency haha

sorry, didn't mean to make it sound like i was disagreeing with your point or your preference is incorrect. Just was trying to say that i think for joel's stated reason "another test for [his] knee", it's probably a more definitive test for the knee to do the grind than the chief.

from what i remember the chief was a bit harder and longer than the grind. especially considering the chief invovled going back down too.. the view is much nicer as the chief is actually a peak where is the grind just gets you to the chalet at the base of the skiing area...
as for the grind i just thought it would be a good outdoor physical activity to do maybe on a semi regular basis. harder to do the chief regularly b/c of the extra time required driving/hiking. like nat said earlier it's almost a day trip or maybe halfday trip. where as the grind can be done after work in a relatively shorter span of time.

actually, i thought that the chief was more physically challenging than the grind, while the grind was more mentally challenging due to it being boring as sin lol.

dang i type slow.

but yeah, i think the chief was harder not just because you have to go down too, but going up you have to use your arms (different muscles), balance and creativity around certain spots. and not to mention that there are three peaks of varying difficulty to choose from as a goal, not just one.
