Broken Rice

went to this restaurant with joyce on the 28$ dine out menu. it's on hastings by gilmore.

serving was pretty decently sized. neither of us finished our full meals. sort of a higher end vietnamese take, than your standard pho place. but when we looked at their actual menu everything was more in line was standard pho places at maybe slightly higher prices.

for dineout, i had the following:
squid ate the spring roll
chicken on chicken on curry
fried banana and ice cream

it was pretty good. but none of those items are on their regular menu. so i can't recommend the place as a staple. the service was very good though. so give it a try if interested but i wouldn't say it's a must not miss place.

I tried this place a couple of weeks ago.

Although the food tasted good, it was anything special that you can't find at regular Vietnamese restaurants. You're paying 2 or 3 times more than regular places though (except the pho is about average price).

I found the service was poor though. The restaurant isn't huge (about 12 tables). There were 4 servers the night I went, and they were so *seemingly* busy that they had to snub me a few times when I tried to flag one of them down.

Bottom line for me was that the food tasted good, but you're paying extra for nothing special except maybe nicer plating and decor.

maybe joyce and i just got lucky with the service. the owner came by and chatted with us and there were always servers standing by waiting for any given table.

I complained about their service on a big review site... maybe they listened.

maybe they talked to joel to see if he was the one who wrote the review so they could punch you in the back of the head

actually makes a lot of sense, i think maybe G's review did go a long way. that night it looks like they were training new staff too. and the owner even asked us for suggestions or complaints if they can improve. so i think maybe his review has made them more sensitive to customer service.

either way, it's ok if you want try dressed or more contemporary vietnamese food, but i wouldn't go out of your way to try this place.
