macbook pro or lenovo y500?

i called lenovo today, after leaving a security note to my cc to make sure any transaction from them passes in the next couple of days.
lenovo told me they didn't even charge my credit card yet, since they only do so after they ship the machine out, so it's been nearly a month now (my order was on nov. 26th), and my order has not even been built yet, let alone shipped out.

apparently they have too many orders, so that's why they have such a delay.

some of the pros i have for the macbook aren't just excuses, the look/size/weight/battery factors to do weigh in. as I do intend to use this as a work laptop too for any of the work I may do that falls outside of my BC Hydro client. If this was purely for gaming, then there are other routes I would have considered (alienware, sager, northwest falcon, razer, asus, etc...)

the problem with a lot of the more powerful laptops out there is they make them look like "toys" in my opinion. the last thing I want to do if I meet a client or have a business meeting is pull out some "gamer" laptop. macbook pro is powerful enough that I could probably do "most the heavy lifting i need although maybe comes up a little bit short" and it looks professional, so i have no qualms about whipping it out.

also in regards to apple, and tablets of all brands, they are increasingly becoming a part of the business sector at least from an IT perspective. from the presentations perspective, or the mobility factor, for off site field work, GPS, camera functionality, etc... the list goes on.

for me it's not about the brand or logo on the lid, it's about it's all the unnecessary doo-dads on these other laptops. massive exhaust ports, university textbook thickness, led lights, and so on, that makes it feel unprofessionaly. if alienware made a clean looking laptop, i'd just be as open to that one. problem is they don't as most high end pc laptops don't. apple just happens to do it. there's no way i'd bring in one those apple ibooks if that's what apple was making now either.

As for the business "stigma" you might want to know that in 2012 alone, three of the major law firms downtown, two of the larger private equity firms, and one major Health Authority made the jump from PC / Blackberry over to an Apple enterprise solution. Was it more expensive? yes, but the ability for Apples to run Win 7 or just be a thin client and have the imaging perks of OSX, plus the fact that most of their IT decision makers were just too damn tired of waiting yet another year for a BB refresh were the ultimate decisive factor in going with Apple. In the long run, they are saving money as the Apple ecosystem is far more forward thinking and future proof.

the razerblade is actually pretty close to being clean and powerful for the pc laptops, except it only comes in a whopping 17" and the fact it has a lcd panel as a part of the keyboard. also the fact that it's $2400...

if they had something that remotely looked as clean as a macbook pro, for the pc and had the same specs as the y500 and a similar price tag, there would likely be zero debate and wouldn't have needed to ask for opinions, and would have probably been ok waiting the 2 months for it too... (well maybe not that last one...)... it's just too bad there isnt.

i agree that stigma is there, but it's actually fading pretty quick. i also see more and more apple products in the work environment. Which kinda irks me. I personally don't like working on macs (as much as you wish i did so you could bash me too lol) because i grew up with a pc ecosystem. It's just that i'm not used to the whole one mouse button thing among other quirks. Not that i hate macs, i just refuse to work on it because i'm used to where things are on a windows os, like application logs and system settings. I'd be lost in OSX and my own personal productivity which is directly linked to microsoft development tools would be hampered. although i imagine that i could probably pick it up pretty quick.

I think i see more management/admin type personnel using macs because they place more value in presentation aesthetics and productivity and overall "user-friendliness" but as a software developer, it's still PC dominated. Developers require more access to system components than management/admin people.
i really should be working

the funny thing is that from what i remember of how this whole mac/pc debate started in the 90's was around the fact that pc's had way more applications while macs were much better machines. looking at at least the mac mobile ecosystem i'd wonder who's laughing now (although that wasn't steve jobs' original intent).

however, as for productivity tools i'd still say that windows has the upperhand. but again, that comes from an almost zero business background.

another gripe that i heard about macs is that you can't customize worth squat. if you're into stuff like that, then pc's are the way to go. macs only allow you to do what macs allow you to do, while pc is a bit more open and free. but then again, macs sure are pretty.

the discussion here is not really concerning software here, but hardware. if i got a macbook pro i would certainly be running windows on it through bootcamp anyways.

that's the only way i could run my dev software anyways.

also that i may or may not do some apple dev down the road too, so a mac capable machine would be required when that eventuality happens. I just don't know if that will be within the next year or not, so whether i should be that forward thinking in a laptop may not apply for now.

can bootcamp run any version of windows? or does it matter?
i remember it only being able to run xp (which isn't a bad thing), but i wonder if you need newer incarnations of windows for your software.
