Actually, if i remember my movies that have taken place in olden times correctly, it was only the rich who used them and were trained to do so if they didn't have a servant to do it for them. The regular folk (the 99%, as it were) let that hair grow like fynn on vacation.

My point is that shaving was for the elite, not everyone.

I've had some barbers use it on me for touchups. You keep having the thought, what if they are a psycho? It does cut very smooth tho. Not that i would use one myself.
