we're semi-looking for a tv (not for us sadly), and i'm wondering what your preference is and why.

i don't care what you currently have, just wondering what your thoughts are on the three different technologies.

from the research i was doing LED can typically produce thinner displays (as they now use a method called edge-lighting, rather than the traditional backlighting), I believe LED generally produces less heat and consumes less energy. LED is basically replacing the LCD standard, because they can produce thinner, more efficient displays with the same quality in terms of sharpness, mid-to-high range LCD/LED will have other technologies to improve handling of fast motion and increase color/contrast to compete with plasma.

Plasma has always provided the best color, contrast and handle fast motion the best. I think previously they did not provide as sharp an image as LCD/LED. But that may have changed now. They produce more heat.

in terms of price LED is the most expensive, Plasma and LCD are about the same.

There's a Samsung 51" for 499. If it's a gift, get the cheapest one i suppose.

Picture Quality:

Room with controlable lighting: Plasma

Brightly lit room: LED

Lower upfront Bill: Plasma

Lower Hydro Bill: LED

The VERY BEST picture quality: Plasma in an unlit room.

I'll be moving my Plasma into the Dance room downstairs and putting an LED into the Family Room in the new place.

yes room lighting is important consideration when it comes to a tv as well.

yeah, i know led's are energy efficient and plasma heats up like a dog in prison. i like energy savings, and picture quality is nice but not sure if it matters when you're only watching sd chinese shows.

SD looks like crap on all the new tv's

when did i say i cared? i hardly watch tv.

no it doesn't. i was just replying to how shows on sd look bad on an hdtv. i totally know about it because half the shows that ryan watches are on sd. i don't see how that means i care. i still let him watch them and i'm not complaining about it.
