Chance it with Aftermarket HID kit OR keep stock reflectors?

Postby Duncan » Thu Aug 02, 2012 10:09 am

So we bought a Tucson yesterday... yup, i caved and bought a new car... but we kept the Jetta so we didn't trade in lols...

anyways, the Tucson doesn't have an option for HIDs even at the highest limited trim so try as i may, my friend google hasn't shown me any oem HID housing/kits i can buy for the car. Well, i should say that the european version has projector HIDs available but i haven't really found any viable options for them yet. I know those ebay kits are kinda a roll of the dice as to whether they'll be worth it. Some people say they never had any issues with ebay kits and they're going on 4-5 yrs with them in, but others say they're crap because they flicker or burn out quick.

i wouldn't necessarily buy an ebay housing/kit, but maybe something like

i'm just worried that the housing wont fit well and that the HID kit sucks...

do you guys have any recommendations or should i just stick with the stock reflectors?

wouldn't recommand anything over 4500k for colour temps if you do go for a kit. Aberdeen sells them for $70 bux. The bulb and ballast.

if you're getting hid's, always use projectors. having said that, if you were to find an oem option, be prepared to pay and arm and a leg. i don't know much about hyundai's cpu and electronics and such, but i know for my car (stock halogens), i'd need to upgrade my cecm if i were to use oem projector housings. there are aftermarket options, but usually nothing is as good as oem of course.

i'd stay away from ebay lights. quite often their quality sucks ass and you'll be looking at replacing them soon anyway. at this point i'd save up for either an oem option or at least a good replica oem option.

as for burning out, that should be a ballast/bulb issue, not a projector housing issue... UNLESS you have leaks, which is also a possibility (from what i hear, more like a probability).

haha, say congrats to lish... i've hardly driven the thing... i still drive the junky jetta to work during the week, and i only drive the tucson on the weekends or if we have a family outing during the weeknights.

anyways, i've decided against buying hids for now. I can't find any good options to buy, and i can't even really find oem projectors. I even looked up UK sites because apparently the ix35 (what the tucson is called in europe) has projectors there. Oh well...

yeah, in that case i wouldn't bother. unless they're copying oem, quite often the aftermarket designed projectors are ugly and leak.
however, if you can find a somewhat reputable brand, that won't be bad as well. some brands for european cars (not sure about korean brands) are hella, valeo, and something else that starts with D. stay away from spyder, jom, and most of the ebay brands.

i found a set of oems, but they dont look as nice as some of the random aftermarket designs. For starters, there aren't leds, and no halo angle eyes (or whatever you call them)... surprisingly though, the oems aren't that much more expensive. Makes me wonder if they're real oems or not.

i also read that people needed to buy and hookup bypass relays to the HID ballasts because they don't work properly w/o them... i'm figuring a whole working system would cost me close to $700 after all said and done with the oems... hmmm....

Yeah, hid's aren't plug and play. They can be close, but almost always you'd have to splice something.

I'm not a fan of angel eyes or led's, unless the car came with them i thin they look cheesy. But then, even if the car came with them it's a crapshoot.
