keep windows 8 phone or give it to winnie or sell it?

got a gift today, nokia lumia 820. yes, i know it's not the 920, but it's basically the same thing in a smaller package and different camera.
i was totally considering the 920, but now with bb10 on the horizon i'm not sure i want to jump that ship just yet. winnie's iphone is 2 years old now, and she could use an upgrade. however, i could probably get a decent amount of money for this if i sell it.

actually, seeing as how it was a gift, i probably won't sell. either keep it for myself or give it to winnie.

the fido phones kinda suck though. that's why we were freely giving ours out.

anyway, i couldn't resist and fired up the phone. i wasn't going to. it's weird, because all the icons are different sizes and stuff, and there's no way almost of telling what icon is what without actually opening it (they're not labelled whatsoever). so far it seems to be too much phone for either winnie or myself.

i have to admit it's a really nice looking ui though.

i think if there was more app support for windows 8, i wouldn't mind getting a win8 phone... the live tiles are a really neat concept.

I can't stop playing with this phone. Actually posting from it now. Not a fan of the keyboard to be honest, the iphone touch keyboard seems to work better and is positioned better. This one is actually weird, the keys don't go end to end of the screen, there's a gap on either side...

so after a weekend with the phone here's my review:
-it's excellent for the heavy social media user. i'm on fb a lot, but i don't make much use of twitter or linkedin. if you use those three a lot, this phone has this great "people" feature that groups all updates in one spot, or you can make your own groups with shared messages, calendars and pictures (works better with other windows 8 users).
-i could live without the live tiles, but it makes things pretty.
-the ui is simply gorgeous. i never thought i'd say that about any operating system, but i don't know how else to describe it.
-business features suck balls. can't make folders, organising apps is a pain in the arse, i can't seem to open documents of the microsd card. typing blows, and texting and emailing is confusing at best. the worst part is how the keyboard likes to linger so i can barely see what's on the screen as the keyboard blocks it all.
-size wise (might be moot as most would probably try to go for the 920, not the 820) feels about right for using with one hand, but there are times when it feels like it's just going to drop, making things go a lot slower.

all in all, i think i still prefer my blackberry if for nothing more than easy document viewing/editing and organisation of the entire phone. it's neat how the metro/start screen is so customisable, but to be honest i hate scrolling around looking for the app that i want.

So to summarize, it looks pretty and would be good for just grouping your social media updates. Otherwise, everything else about it sucks? I didn't see much good stuff from your review.

i think it's a good phone. hardware wise it's farking fast. like lightening fast. mind you i haven't played with the iphone5 much, so i can't exactly compare. but it seems like the phone knows before you swipe that you're going to swipe and is already doing it before you do. it's that fast.

i just want my phone to help me to be more productive, and this phone doesn't exactly do it. it's not a "mobile computer" like my blackberry is.

apps-wise i don't know. i'm not really one to surf around looking for apps to clutter the phone more, but i have looked for games for ryan because he keeps asking to play with it. OH YEAH one really awesome feature is the "kid's corner". it's like a whole different profile completely controlled by me, in which i can put whatever apps on there. so when ryan wants to play he can go into that kids corner and play his games and i don't need to worry about him deleting my emails or downloading expensive apps or anything like that.

i don't have a win8 machine so i can't comment on integration, but what i've read those features aren't available yet anyway.

oh i forgot to mention that if you're into microsoft stuff, like the zune and xbox, then this is a pretty good phone for that. a lot of xbox integration, along with signing in with your xbox account and changing your player avatar and stuff like that. i think you can use the phone as a remote for your xbox too, and a keyboard, but seeing as how i don't have one anymore, i'll never really know.

yeah it pretty much is. but if you used it, then the ui would be somewhat familiar. they call it xbox music now or something.

it's a shame, as the zune was a pretty decent product from what i read. i've only played with it in stores.

so i'm starting to hate windows 8.
email on the phone is only cool with activesync or exchangesync or whatever, that shaw is on. however, because it syncs with the server, as soon as an email is off the server (like say into my outlook on my computer), then it's deleted off my phone too. i can't seem to find a way to change that.

and if your account isn't with activesync or whatever, say like, my work email, then it can only check your email for you every 15 minutes (no push).

i'm sure there's a way around all this, but you know what? with my blackberry all i had to do was type in my email address and password and rim took care of the rest. is it really that hard?

i miss the convenience and efficiency of my blackberry.
