not sure if you guys heard the news or kept up with it, but rick warren, lead pastor/founder of saddleback church/ministries in california (probably best known for his "purpose driven blah blah" books), posted this on this facebook wall yesterday:

as someone whose family has been directly affected by the great leap forward, i'm pretty disgusted by it. here are some blog responses by some respected colleagues:

spoken vernacular grammar and written grammar are different though, and the quote is probably just someone's transposing of his sermon.

no, but i can see how they can be offensive. along with all jokes.
but this "joke" in particular (if you read the comment i wrote but was unable to post) touches a sensitive spot as the red guard directly contributed to my family's dysfunction and also my uncle's eventual suicide. so yeah, i'm not pleased with the "joke", which by the way, looking at the original post wasn't meant as a joke as much as a motivational piece.
