A lot of the numbering systems they use in product names don't make much sense.

What's the significance of #9900 for the Bold 9900?

it's the next bold in line. the previous bold was 9700, and then 9780 was the one i had (the cdma was 9760 i think), and the 9800's are the torches. the 9900 is the next number that made sense (i thought at least). it's a new form factor.
the 9780 was updated with bb7 and is the 9790. makes sense to me.

however, "iphone 5" to me clearly sounds like "the 5th iphone". "bold 9900" doesn't sound like "the 9900th bold". especially when all the ipods and such are pretty much numbered chronologically (except for "the new ipad", i wonder what it'll be called when the next one comes out haha. the previously new ipad?)

I wasn't saying the Bold 9900 sounded like the 9900th version of the Bold, but its place in the version hierarchy isn't clearly stated either. You know how it makes sense since you're a BB enthusiast, but to me, it takes effort to figure it out. BB10 sounds like the 10th version of the BB OS, but oddly enough the previous version was BB7.

I'm not picking on Blackberry... I was just using it as an example that you can relate to. I don't find the iPhone numerical naming convention very easy to understand either, but I know its history and I know iPhone 5 doesn't mean it's the 5th iPhone version, just like you know BB10 isn't the 10th BB OS.

Version naming has always been and always will be retarded in the tech world. It's basically whatever you wanna call it. A weird naming convention as gordon stated isn't anything new to anybody. Complaining about it is like complaining about the fact that it rains so much in Vancouver...
