Fido has some new plans that are pretty close to being as cheap as retention plans.
You don't need to go to retentions to get a hardware upgrade. I don't know what type of plan he has now, but if it's legacy, it can't be that good anymore compared to what's out there.

yeah, the new plans that fido has kicks ass. like i said in the other thread, i'm basically paying the same thing off retentions now and am getting a little more than i did while on retention (earlier evening/weekend, unltd international text, unltd canada ld), all i'm losing is regular voice mail (it's mini now, big whoop) and i think 50 daytime minutes (but we talked about how little winnie and i talk on the phone anyway). oh, i also lost per second billing too, it's per minute now, but again, with the amount we talk it doesn't really matter.

having said that, i was able to renew winnie's plan no problem in october. if what sam says is true, then maybe this is a new thing that they're doing because of the new cheaper plans and such. it's just too bad that for a decent phone you have to go with their max plans, as their talk, text and data plans seem quite sufficient.

So explain to me a successful business model where a carrier buys a phone for $650, sells it to you for $150, and lets you keep your $38 plan for the duration of a new 3 year contract. Over the term of the contract, they are working of a net $26 / month on you to provide you service. That number needs to cover all infrastructure, growth and development costs as well. Doesn't work.

it costs them $12 a month to give you a line? i thought it was less than that.
either case, fido was operating on razor thin margins from the get go 15 some odd years ago. that's why they're called fido, they're expecting loyalty from their customers for the low prices (and at the time, no contracts but subsidized phones). however, after rogers bought them things changed a bit and i'm not sure what their m.o. is now.

their prices for plans are still cheaper than most though.

I'm paying cost on my employee cell line. Cost is $15, but that includes data as well.

No, they pay full price from Apple. Maybe $10 less. You want to hear a stupid corporate policy? Remember the $10M in Playbooks that we took back in Q4 last year? Blackberry finally signed off the last credit check last week and we asked them where they wanted us to send them. They said no thanks, just give is a letter of destruction. We asked them if they were retarded, why not donate them to an educational institution or put them towards a good cause or something. We offered to handle the logistics for free. They just said no thanks. Destroy them. Now we have to find an environmentally friendly recycling plant to destroy them and then bill BB for that. They just have no clue.

A Letter of Destruction means they are liable to destroy them. If they were to find any of the ones that were meant to be destroyed floating out in the market somewhere, they could get in a lot of trouble.
