it's not just about the communication, but the implementation too. other provinces did receive breaks directly to the taxpayers. where as HST in BC was completely reliant on the business providing the end consumer with relief by lowering prices.

so it's Fed Gov fail.
and Prov Gov fail.

if they said hey we are doing hst now, but we are offsetting it by lowering your provincial income tax etc... or the PST portion immediately then you probably have something that might have gone by smoother. but if you just have the government say hey we are just going to make you pay 5% more for a bunch stuff you didn't have to pay it on before... well there you have it.

I agree, that's what I meant by the government working through it. I actually didn't know about the tax breaks in other provinces, but that's a pretty good idea. They're trying to fix the BC economy for businesses by putting more taxes on the backs of the consumers by suddenly doing HST. A transition period would've been nice with a tax break of some sort. That's probably what the federal grant of $1.6 billion to BC for switching to HST could've been used for.

i seem to remember seeing something in the church's year end as well as my own personal taxes.

Do you mean the quarterly HST credit? They had that for GST too, but you have to qualify for it. You don't get it if your income is too high.

no, it wasn't a quarterly thing (although i think winnie gets it, and it's more than before).

i think i remember now, but maybe it's just for churches. but we got all the estimated hst back, which of course is more than gst, so our return (because as a non-profit we don't pay tax) was bigger than before.

the church's rebates are estimates, and so were mine. you're technically right, but i guess it could really go either way.
but yeah, i guess it's not a tax break per se.
