No good deed goes unpunished.

You like your server/driver/busboy/maid/etc. you tip them. All of a sudden they're raking in the dough. The other staff/management gets jealous and in an attempt to make things 'fair', they pay the staff less and start cutting into their tips. Even the government is onboard by having a separate minimum wage for servers/bartenders. Now we're expected to keep 'tipping' everybody or else we're the bad guys.

We're enablers.

When I was working downtown, the clinic had 8 RMTs, never heard anyone of them refusing tips. There was even a part on the receipt that asks for how much you want to tip, and it was only for the RMTs receipts.

They're not going after all restaurant workers... but they are doing "random" audits. That way, it keeps all the restaurant workers on their toes. Plus, they're backdating the audits, so if you've worked as a restaurant worker for over 7 years without having paid taxes on tips, then they'll make you pay up to 7 years worth of tip taxes.

Some restaurant workers are smart and they claim a portion of their tips to keep suspicion low. Some of them don't claim anything though, which is just inviting CRA to visit them.

sometimes you have to destroy an entire system to build a better one. stop tipping IMO if you want to see a better and more consistent system otherwise you're just encouraging or affirming unwanted behaviour

if it's more than $20 and you get a valid receipt from a charity, sure.
