I've heard it equated to the women's rights movements of the 60s(?) where they wanted equal rights with men, but had no way of achieving it. They had no solution to offer. All they were able to do was voice their dissatisfaction with the way things were.

Still... regarding Occupy, I can't help but wonder how many of them are hoping they get beat up by the law so they can turn around and sue them... getting rich in the process.

from my understanding it wasn't women vs. men though. it was women + sympathizing men against the system that spanned generations.

for other protests i just see it as an "us against them" type thing. maybe it can be equated to that, but maybe i don't see it that way for whatever reason.

gordon made a good point differentiating "protests" and "rallies" in the bible verses forum, under the matthew text i believe. i'd link it but i forgot to get the link heh heh.

The Occupy movement definitely falls under the protest category. I mean, even the name of their movement suggests it.

i think "public demonstations" or maybe "civic disobedience" better describes what you guys feel negatively towards. protest is a very general term. the Protestant Church was formed out of protest afterall, and all causes, are "protests" in a way.

no, the protestant church was formed out of a reformation. the rc church just labelled it as a protest when luther had no intention to do so.

"The Protestant Reformation was a 16th-century split within Western Christianity initiated by Martin Luther, John Calvin and other early Protestants. The efforts of the self-described "reformers", who objected to ("protested") the doctrines, rituals and ecclesiastical structure of the Roman Catholic Church, led to the creation of new national Protestant churches." ~wikipedia

to protest simply means to be against something. yes it's well known as the reformation, that doesn't mean they weren't in protest to the way things were being done.

you're seriously going to quote wikipedia over someone who studied under one of the leading reformation theologians/historians in the world? lol.

luther didn't "reject" as much as he wanted to "reform". there's a huge difference. the rc's didn't want anything to do with him or his crazy ideas, so they excommunicated him. john calvin et al wanted to protest, so the whole movement adopted that name. however, the spirit of the reformation wasn't about protest, it was about reforming.

oh i read the article wrong, i thought it said "reject" when it actually says "object".

i still think gordon's point of the distinction between rally and protest is a good one. just because the protestant church was coined that by the people who felt protested against, it doesn't make it a protest.

Now I think we're arguing between the dictionary meaning of the word "protest" and an actual protest group.

but the group/cause "occupy" is not exclusive to those people that tented out i don't think.

going back to the point i was trying to make, i just don't see how "causing others inconveniences to prove a point" actually gets anything done.

you want financial equality? ok, join the government and rally others to your side to slowly change the system. i don't see how sleeping in a tent on a field that our tax dollars pay for does anything.
