Why are there so many ADHD kids now these days?

because everything has a diagnosis now. i remember reading this thing about a dad talking about his kid who was diagnosed with adhd. he was diagnosed because he was rambunctious, overly playful, and really liked to run around. the dad said, "when i was a kid, that was called being a boy".

i think what's bothering me is that i get the work load is higher. such is a changing world. jobs often don't stay the same forever. you have your busy moments, your dull moments, and the moments when your productivity is expected to increase.

when i was at shoppers, the head office decided to cut all hours across the board by like 20%, but still increase productivity by like 20%. that means we had to work almost twice as hard (if that's even quantifiable) in order to meet the standards put out in front of us. i don't see how that's different for teachers. will the kids suffer from having overcrowded classes and some special needs kids? yeah, probably. but probably just as much as they're affected by not going to school and watching their beloved teachers act like... well... school children.

Re ADHD:
My theory is that it's how they are raised. They're watching too many Michael Bay movies where there's a scene change every 1.5 seconds. They start to think this is normal.

he's supposed to go to kindergarten. so not sure if that counts or does it only apply to "returning" students?

a colleague sent this out, i thought it was an interesting read on this strike situation:
https://helesialuke.wordpress.com/2014/08/26/258/

tba, i did consider private school. however, i think private schools (that i know of at least) has been lacking imho in the sense that (as per the article as well) they are just wanting to produce cookie cutter kids. you break the mold, you're out of school.

and i'm not known to be a cookie cutter kid, and nor do i want my kids to be either. i would have no issues paying for my kid's education, but the problem is just which institution is really worth my dollars (over free public education, that is)?

i just had another thought: are the people (non-teachers) who are against what the government is doing here the same people that were against the HST?
i wonder if all of this sentiment no longer is "for the kids" as much as it is "the government sucks".

At this point, I see an equal amount of "this is no longer about the kids" sentiment against the teachers and the government alike.

Yeah, that's what I've been saying all along... I don't blame the teachers though. I blame the BCTF.

BCTF offers to end strike, if they go with binding arbitration to resolve the CBA. BC Ed Minister says no.

As I understand it, they kinda have to say no. I think they said yes to the doctors a decade(?) or so ago and got totally hosed. Also, with the nurses coming up, they definitely would not want to open that door.

as far as I am aware, binding arbitration isn't supposed to be biased toward any side... and both sides are at risk since arbitration can go in either direction. I believe both parties present their cases to an arbitrator which ultimately weighs the arguments and decides.
