it's kinda shady that they set one of their focus according to that service plan document to be popular opinion... probably spending a significant budget on those "demistyfying insurance" ads and other marketing stuff. if this company was really doing a good job, i would think it wouldn't be necessary... people for the most part would be happy that they believe the rates the pay is fair and the service they get in return is fair...

ICBC's mandate as a non-profit corporation IS actually to provide their customers with the lowest possible rates:

actually, if the weather were nicer here i'd probably rock a scooter or electric bike. those things are hilarious.

but for icbc giving money to the government, i think that may be similar to what we do here at the church with our preschool. although the church "owns" and "runs" the preschool, they have to pay us rent every month. it seems silly as the same organisation that owns the building also owns the preschool, but it was explained to me that for the books to be in order and to maintain its non-profit status, it had to be that way. also, i think in doing so we get more support from the government in that our preschool is an actual preschool rather than a bunch of hacks trying to teach kids.

it's a way of accountability. so i wonder if icbc may be under a similar charge that they have to give the government so much per year or they won't seem like they're actually doing anything.

If the govt REALLY wanted to have the lowest price for customers, they wouldnt have created a crown corporation that holds a monopoly over the industry. The free market through competition would achieve this goal far better than having a monopoly.

they want their pie and eat it too. i don't actually have a problem with the monopoly on insurance, that way i don't have to keep shopping around and feel bad when i'm locked into something that turns out to be bad.

this way, everyone is equally screwed.

yea, i've driven 60-65 past speed traps before and haven't gotten pulled over... gave me a little scare but i wasn't pulled over...

that being said, one time i was driving home from ubc and just left the ubc highway and some cop clocked me speeding at about 65km/h and pulled me over in front of right where that turn off to jericho is. I was like wtf, you have nothing better to do than to ticket poor students? he did say he'd give me the lowest fine but it was still like $150 or something at the time.... then again, if a student can afford a car, s/he isn't that poor... but still.. some students like me were poor!!! wtfff...

sometimes i think the cops just stand there to make people slow down. which still serves their purpose, they're just not getting money out of it.

I always thought it was 50kms. But according to the motor vehicle act, it's 40kms.
