For me: Cable is about $75 / month. 5% of that is $3.75. Over the course of a year that's $45. And I don't even have HD. And that's one thing ONLY. Nevermind cell, internet, and home phone. And these four things are only telecommunications. There are plenty of expenses out there.

I'd say that it's noticeable.

But given the choice I'd prefer having the option of cancelling my cable, cell, and internet and saving money than being gouged directly off my income.

One way or the other, the government is going to get the money it wants.

It's just a matter of where it's going to come from.

cell phones were pst exempt before? i thought i remember paying pst on my bill... i guess not.

in that case it'd be double for me, seeing as how i pay for two phones a month, two cars, two insurance plans, and much of the food for 2.5 people. on a single pastor's salary. and i still don't see a huge difference.

i think everyone knows that i don't make that much, probably less than all of you on this forum (except for jt for now and shaun only because he's retired), but i feel like i can still live comfortably even with the hst in place. so i don't see a need for concern (or anger in many cases around the province).

but then again, i didn't have to pay taxes last year.

I got lunch at Church's Chicken today and apparrently there was a price increase.

They had a note up at the counter that said:

Notice to our customers, here are the reasons for our recent price increase:

Cost of Hydro - up 4%
Cost of labour - up 3%
Cost of chicken - up 5%
Cost of trans-fat free oil - up 4%

So where are those supposed HST savings at for businesses that the gov't advertised would be enough to help create new jobs and lower the end user prices?

I'm not sure, I don't go there often enough to remember how it cost before..
I know KFC's Toonie Tuesday meals went from $2 to $2.99 recently. Any more and they won't be able to call it a Toonie meal anymore.

I think it's important to look at the overall effect of HST rather than a few industries that have negatively been affected by it though!

I was just trying to play the devils advocate.. I support the intended purpose of the HST.
That being said.. isn't the government doing the same thing? They're advertising a few industries that benefitted, but kind of skimming over the results of the market as a whole.
