if they're still doing what they did with the release of the 4s, you have to have a $50/mo or more plan with data to get the iphone for cheap on contract. That's why i had to buy a used iphone4 for alicia instead of getting it directly from fido. There was no point in her getting a $50/mo plan when her current plan is only like $30/mo

but i could be wrong. Maybe they lifted the $50/mo plan minimum

hmm... i just checked the fido website, i couldn't find the fine print that said you have to have a minimum $50/mo plan to get the phone on a 3 year contract for cheap. Maybe they lifted that restriction...

It's always 50+/mo for any free/discounted smart phone.

The best offer was from Bell for 2 x S3 for $129 when it first came out, but then you will require to sign up for 2 plans.

250mb of data sucks.

For the iPhone 5, there's no minimum monthly rate requirement. They changed it because they've implemented a new service cancellation fee.

i have 50mb of data now and i rarely go over 100. that's why i figure 250 is totally doable for me. and now with shawopen, i probably need even less than that.

I'm near the end of my contract for my retention plan. when they gave it to me they gave me a bunch of credits that are supposed to last til the end of my contract i think. my guess is that once my contracts expires and i am on month to month, my bill will go up is this correct?

do i need to renegotiate my plan to get another retention plan with all those credits? so that i can have the exact same plan?

you can just renew your contract and it'll stay exactly the same, but if you choose to go month-to-month, then yeah, your bill will go up.
time to get another free/cheap phone haha.

at least, that's what happened with winnie's contract. she's on retentions with a $14 credit set to expire last week. i called them and asked them about it, and they said that credit is tied to a minimum of a 2 year contract, and to keep the credit i need to renew the contract. so i said ok, i want the same exact plan. they said ok and i got you a phone.

however, if you wanted to renegotiate your contract (i.e. get more or pay less), then you'd have to talk to retentions again, otherwise you can just renew on the phone, at the store, and i think even online.

with my new job, it might make sense for me to finally get a data plan so i'll have email access on the go.

what sort of data plans do you guys have with fido on retention? what might you recommend for me?

if you're just going for email, there are minimum plans out there, depending on what phone you get (blackberry data sometimes is in a league of its own). personally, i just got the cheapest one out there (at the time it was $15 for 50mb, but i go over every month but pay no more than $2 extra), but now i think it's even cheaper and i just didn't get around to changing it.

unless you're going to tether and/or surf like crazy, the cheapest will be fine. i find that my 50mb (i've gone up to 150mbish max) is good enough for my emailing, bbm'ing, and light surfing here and there. but then, bis data is lighter than other phones apparently, so i can't say if you get a different kind of phone.

There's no retention plan for data. The credits are all offsetting the voice plan only.

There were promos that had $30 for 6gb data, but usually it's $30 for 2gb. 2gb is usually more than enough for the average user.

Keep in mind, surfing on a BB is different than on an Android or iPhone. iPhone and Android use a full browser, so it downloads all the full pics on a webpage.

I average 500mb with push mail and moderate surfing.
