i was in a debate about this on another forum, and people can't seem to understand that guns have a pretty big role in people getting killed. they chalk it all up to irresponsible gun management and mental illness.

Dunno how accurate the stats are but here's what I quickly came up with:
Americans who own guns: 45%
Percentage of guns to number of Americans: 90%
Percentage of Americans who will suffer a mental illness in their lifetime: about 50%

I think I've seen those stats before.. Keep in mind "mental illness" is a pretty broad term that could encompass non-threatening illnesses like reading disabilities (i.e. Dyslexia). As I don't really see Dyslexia causing someone to arm themselves with guns to go on a rampage, that 50% number should really be lower in the context of that debate.

I'm not saying we shouldn't help the mentally ill.. But what's the first thing you do when someone who is mentally ill starts to be a threat to himself and others around him? Take away all the sharp pointy objects...

Yeah, it's a pretty broad term, but I find myself contemplating how fickle sanity can really be.

Sure 50% sounds pretty high so lets knock it down to 12%. That's 1 out every 2 families of 4. And sure, people going on murderous rampages is all the craze in the media right now, but what about the lowly crimes of domestic violence? Murder suicide? That's a lot of illness, and that's a lot of guns. How can they be surprised? How is having more guns supposed to help?

Kids died in Connecticut so you want to have teachers armed inside the school. Last year some guy shot up a movie theatre. Armed ushers in theatres? Wasn't there some guy who shot up a Sikh temple a while back? Armed religous leaders at places of worship? Do they really want armed checkout clerks at the grocery store? What about the park? Is that REALLY the America they want?? Actually, now that I think about it, they probably already do have armed checkout clerks.

I just can't believe how they could even think that more is better.


I remember growing up how my mom used to love watching shows like 20/20 and Nightline and whatever else they had. I hated them. I used to call them 'Fear Shows' 'cause all they do is incite fear. And that's all the NRA is doing now. They're inciting fear into the population. Everybody needs a gun to protect themselves from the 'crazy' that lives next door.
