there are many naysayers though, and to be honest i think it's them (not the company) that is the demise of blackberry.
bb10 could kick ass but the haters have to keep putting blackberry down in hopes that their reputation and past predictions of blackberry may not be tarnished (imho). the way i see it, people have been sh!tting on blackberry for so long, that once bb puts out a good product (which i really think they did with my last two phones, bolds 9780 and 9900), they have to keep sh!tting on them or else they'll be seen as hypocrites or fools who don't know what they're talking about. unfortunately, the masses listen to these few, and continue on their love affair with ios and android.

to be honest, i don't think half the iphone/android users actually know what blackberries are capable of or what their phones aren't capable of. they only say blackberry is crap because they don't have one. of course, there are the educated few that chose ios or android over bbos, and that's fine with me. but it's those who haven't even tried it but put it down anyway that are annoying.

case in point: a guy a church LOVES his iphone. what did he use before that? a land line. when we had the congregation over at our place a few weeks ago, he asked me what my address was. i told him. he pulled it up on google maps on his iphone and showed me the picture. he said, "see? my phone can do everything". i didn't have the heart that all the other smartphones out there could do that too, including my blackberry that he openly hates on all the time.

and i see this in the professional world too. article after article, authors say crap about blackberry that isn't even true. they talk about "lackluster" support for the company and "little to no excitement", but fail to mention what i said above about phones being sold out everywhere. they ignore the fact that blackberry is widely used in all parts of the world except north america (and antarctica) and how the playbook outsold the ipad in the uk and especially how apple stock isn't doing so well.

but again, i know some users have used bb's and chose another platform over it and that's fine. however, i don't think all of them have, at least if they did, it was a few years ago (an eternity when it comes to technology) when blackberries were admittedly sucking pretty bad. but they continue to compare their current device with its latest os installment to a memory of a phone that didn't have apps when apps just became popular.

wow, that rant was more than i had initially intended. i think i'm just trying to procrastinate from writing this annual report.

Uh, you said all that already in various different places in this forum, lol

I don't know if it'll make you feel better, but Apple's going through the same thing now. They're getting their arses handed to them by people who are calling them a one trick pony, or that Apple lost all its lustre after Steve Jobs died.

Yeah, i've been saying that for years haha. Well, maybe not that harsh, but i just don't think apple is worth the hype that it gives. The problem is when people start to define themselves by their phones, then more is at stake than just functionality of the phone. Iphones were cool, bb's were not, so the hipster crowd shunned bb by calling it a dinosaur, when aside from obvious differences, i didn't see how bb or any other platform was really lacking (at least as much as the iphone lovers wanted you to believe)

Well, iPhone not living up to hype and BB being a dinosaur aren't linked. I still think BB was lagging behind the overall market, regardless of iPhone's performance. BB isn't "lacking", per se. It's a solid product, yes, but it definitely needed updates. The market doesn't want solid, the market wants the next new shiny thing. That was Apple's game. Apple had a good product too, but it was marketed so much better.

You may think the BB bashers are stupid in saying BB is a crap product, but those are the people who are dictating the market. Solid products don't sell... shiny ones do. It doesn't make sense, but that's how the game is played. You say it's a problem when people are identifying themselves by their phone? Apple says that's a victory.

i think it's a problem for people. for businesses furthering their desire for the almighty buck, of course it's a victory.
i felt as though apple was selling an image, not a product. was the product good? yes, but not as good as the image it promised to give you.

that's my point this whole time. after enduring all the time of "bb sucks" and trying to defend myself by saying "it's a solid product that works for me," the most frustrating part about many of those people who put down bb didn't know a bb from their ass (although some did). they just said it because bb didn't promise them the identity that they so longed for and thought apple's empty promise to deliver it would. so because bb wasn't trendy enough, it gave them the right to ridicule.

that's what i mean when i say it's a problem. is bullying a problem? not for the bully. for the bully it's great fun and uplifting inside. but it IS a problem because the focus has become marred and the bully has a false sense of reality and thus acts out in violence and/or oppressing others.

oh wait, aren't we talking about a phone here? lol.

You're villifying Apple for playing the game better though. Apple isn't the one bullying BB. In fact, BB barely hits Apple's radar. They're too busy tackling the Google juggernaut.

Your beef is with hipsters like your brother. They came up with those anti-bb sentiments on their own. I don't remember ever seeing Apple directly do anything that's anti-bb.

Seriously though, who cares what they think.. It's a phone, for crying out loud. If you're that bothered by it, maybe you've got issues with identifying yourself by your phone too.

which... is exactly what i'm doing to them. ok, carry on.

(and no way would i identify my brother as a hipster. he's no where near cool enough lol).

You should get a brick phone just to show them up then.

I was thinking they should make a phone case that looks like that. It would be so cash.

Yeah, that's a brick phone. Get one of those and tell them to identify you with that.

so i got one of these z10s to play with at work, and i must say i am pretty impressed after using the phone for a couple hours. a lot of good features, and the OS is fairly intuitive. I have run across a couple bugs so far (like attaching a file, then says file not found, but email with attachment was sent.....) and exchange auto discover not working..
one thing i hate is the super flexy plastic backing that just stays in place by a handful of clips. you need to bend and pop this off to put in sim,sd, battery. i can see this one breaking, though if battery pulls are not as common as the older handsets then this may not be a big issue.

but there are a couple cool things like being able to zip multiple files on the phone, seeing contact activity (calls, sms, bbm, emails)
i did find some of the applications to run slowish like maps and weather, but perhaps it doesn't like that i don't have a sim in there.
the web browser renders pages really fast. definitely faster than my iphone here.

not a lot of apps out there yet, which is to be expected perhaps. but this is where blackberry will need to invest a lot of time working with developers to build that list of native apps

overall, it is a huge step forward for blackberry but honestly if you are already satisfied with android/ios/windows i don't see a very compelling reason to move over to bb10 unless you are a bbm diehard. the only blackberry unique feature that i see here is BBM. blackberry balance may be cool as well, but it requires the new BES server which i have no interest in setting up just to goof around.
