Well... as it turned out... today was President's Day. :/
I sent my letter of resignation, but didn't get a response until after 6pm.
It seems they would like me to document some of the stuff that I've worked on so I'm gonna work two more weeks and tie up as many loose ends as possible.

Then I'm done.

Why do I feel so guilty?

I really hope I'm not making a huge freaking mistake.

Don't feel guilty, they've been taking advantage of your services for sooooo long now. I don't they felt guilty when they were in behind in your pay.

i always felt guilty whenever i left a job (mind you, i left shoppers about 10 times but i kept coming back). that feeling of leaving them high and dry trying to find a replacement is not that easy to brush off. it's just saying that you're a sensitive and empathetic guy, there's nothing wrong with that.

do you have another job lined up?

I haven't been all that happy with the job (well... not so much the job, but the career) ever since I started with this company. I was sick of programming before I even started with them, but at the time I thought it was the best option.

Why quit now? What pushed me over the edge ... especially since they have FINALLY started paying on time and things are starting to look up for them? Well... spending a very un-restful Christmas setting up everybody's little gadgets and computers and laptops (nevermind having to setup my own new laptop) I realized that it isn't even so much computer programming that I'm sick of, but computers in general. Returning back to work after the holidays was utterly awful. I have a VERY short fuse when it comes to computers and am now prone to flipping out over even the littlest things.

Then I got sick. I was (and still am) sick for about 4+ weeks and I had to take some time off work. It was the worst cold/flu I've ever had in my life yet I hadn't felt better in a LONG time. Then I tried to slowly get back to work and within minutes I was flipping out again.

I decided that for my mental well-being, I had to leave NOW before I did something that could not be undone.

I'm really feeling a variety of things. Relief (even though I'm still workng for two weeks), but also a sense of being a quitter, and a worthless lazy dog F'r.

No, I don't have another job lined up. The plan is to take half a year off and try and recharge. Maybe find a part-time job somewhere or something. During this time off I hope to find something that I'm passionate about (that I can earn a living doing) and perhaps go back to school in the fall if need be.

What sort of career am I leaning towards? I don't know, but I suspect it will have to be something real and not virtual.

Tech support is the worst! Especially when u know everything is right, but for some damn unknown reason a driver would not install properly drives u nuts.

I work in Software QA, I deal with stuff not working all the time. I make stuff not work, then complain about it till its right.

Hope you have a decent amount of savings accumulated, half a year can get pretty pricey when you're not working. You'll have more time on your hands to spend money lol. Go backpacking somewhere cheap for a few months, it costs about the same as staying here but you get to do alot more elsewhere.

but then you'd be paying rent/mortgage/bills for not being there.

6 months to recharge sounds awesome after that story, shaun. hopefully it'll be a lot of time well spent on reflection and replenishing and maybe running (the three r's lol).

now you'll have time to train to be an IRONMAN!!! :)

Anyway, i hope you find what you're looking for. Maybe some backpacking like keian suggested might not be a bad idea. If you can find some cheap storage to store your important stuff and sell/ditch your other crap and stop renting, it might be worth your while. Also, if you go backpacking to those cheap places like keian suggested, i'm sure there's less tech intrusion in those areas so you'll feel a little less suffocated by computers/technology.

The middle east should have some great discounts right now, but finding ways to get there might be a problem.

Just make sure you bring plenty of food and water. Oh, and a map. A tent, first-aid kit, flashlight and an emergency beacon would be a good idea too.
