I'm no seisememologemist, but... if our fault line is due for a major earthquake (tectonic plates are on the brink of slipping), then why don't these smaller earthquakes trigger the big slip?

our building swayed back and forth about 2-3 inches... felt like i was on a boat. some co-workers started to complain about feeling nausea.

I'm glad I was in the car when it happened and didn't feel it... or else I'd be feeling pretty nauseas too.

i guess you are a seismologist.
but that's sorta what i meant. they're not teetering as in playing a balancing act, but they're flat against each other. the quake is caused by the friction as they move in different directions (i'm trying to avoid using the word "rub").

so smaller earthquakes wouldn't cause a bigger one (i don't think), at least one that wasn't already going to happen. but big earthquakes could cause smaller ones.
