Man, sometimes I wonder about how some people got through school.
So a coworker called me to ask this question. Keep in mind, this guy is the manager of the department that makes sure that the company is profitable, so in other words, he deals in numbers.
His question was:
I have a product with an MSRP of $1000 and our discount is 30% off, which is $700. I marked it up by 10% so the the price we sell to our customer is $770. Can you tell me the % discount it would be from MSRP to get to $770?
I must have said "ummmmm" for like 5 seconds before I replied to him, not because I didn't know the answer, but because I wasn't sure if this was a trick question and also finding the best way to answer him while trying not to sound like I'm insulting his intelligence.
So I answer him, and say that it's 23% discount, and he says thank you and asks me what formula I used to come up with that. I ummmmm'd for another 5 seconds, then explained how I did it.
Seriously... grade 5 math, man... *facepalm*
