i thought maggots only fed on dead/rotten flesh? they don't actually eat active tissue. Unless this is a different type of maggot... but still, that's f*k'd up

maybe they were looking for something to eat, but couldn't find anything but wax.

i remember seeing a story years ago about some dude who had maggots living in a massive tumor in his head for months (maybe years? can't remember). The doctors decided to remove the maggots one day and the guy died within days after the procedure.
turns out the maggots were keeping the dude alive because they kept the tumor in check by eating the dead tissue in and around the tumor.
apparently some people have been prescribed "maggot therapy"

How do maggots live for months or years without turning into flies?

maybe they do. They fly out at night, but before they leave, they lay more eggs, and the cycle continues.
Now that explains how all those flies gets into your house.
