TL;DR - Americans/Canadians are upset that It's legal to sell live animals trapped in key chains.

Although I think this is pretty cruel to animals and I don't condone it, I think Americans need to stop vilifying China for things like this. How are these key chains any worse than how Americans treat some of their pets? I think it's pretty cruel to give a pet turtle or lizard to a kid who doesn't know the first thing about turtle care, and the turtle would then endure malnourishment and whatever else, and die within weeks or months. You hear that happen all the time.

i'm thinking about how china "sold" those cats in vases a few years back.

I looked it up and haven't seen anything that says that this is a hoax. I found a few sites that said this is real.

i remember a lot of sites saying the cat thing was real too.

however, the time i spent in china did suggest that the chinese are much more cruel to animals that westerners are.

by cruelty i mean just the general attitude towards animals. from my experience, animals aren't really seen as living creatures as much as they're just there and sometimes in the way.

Anyway, I agree that if these keychains are real, they're pretty cruel. I'm just saying that the Chinese aren't the only ones doing this kind of stuff.

aside from ancient roman gladiator fighting in ancient times a long freaking time ago, the examples you gave are illegal.
if this keychain thing is real, it appears not to be illegal. that's the issue.
