Haiti Aftershock

So i heard that Haiti got hit by an aftershock of 6.1 or something this morning. Man, when it rains it pours.
Oh, and did you guys hear about this joke of a reverend? He claims Haiti had it coming because they made a pact with the devil. He also blamed the 9-11 events on homosexuals.
PS, not sure if this topic should be in the theology forum. Just thought it'd get more response in the general topic forum haha...

i heard about pat robertson's comments. he's a tele-evangelist and a quite outspoken one at that.
it's common thinking, however, among fundamental evangelical circles that there's a sort of divine "cause and effect". essentially, if something bad happens, it's because you've been bad. and if something good happens, it's because you've been good. but that's also up to interpretation too, as i mentioned in another thread that satan (or whatever your definition of the adversary is) will stand in your way if you're doing something good, so something bad will happen. pretty circular and pointless if you asked me.

regardless of whether they had it coming or not, i think the point is that our calling as Christians is to help those in need instead of saying "you deserve it" regardless of who it is we're talking to/about.
I think this guy is just pretty extremely right winged...
Jesus didn't turn to prostitutes and say "you deserve what you get because you're a hoe bag who sold your body to the devil" but he reached out to all in need...
i dunno.. it just seems this guy is pretty misguided and close hearted...

when you say fundamentalist, do you mean they're like the pharisees who try to follow and interpret the law to the T and as literal as they can have it? I'm not sure i fully understand what it means to be a fundamentalist.

that can be a form of fundamentalism.
but by definition, a fundamentalist is someone who so strongly believes in a certain set of ideals or beliefs (usually religious) that anything contrary to those ideals and beliefs are pushed aside as hogwash. but those certain set of ideals or beliefs could be anything from strict conservatism (more likely) to loose liberalism (less likely but possible). it's basically the closing of one's mind to opposing ideas (or reason) to the point that you're actually finding ways of putting the other people down (like jihads on all infidels). another way of putting it would be a "holier than thou" attitude (it's close comparison, but not perfect).
i would say that many pharisees were fundamentalists, but i wouldn't say that all fundamentalists look like pharisees, nor would i say that all pharisees were fundamentals for that matter (they weren't all bad, there were a couple examples of good ones if you read the gospels closely enough).
i would say that pat robertson is a fundie mostly because of his strong conviction of that divine cause and effect that i was talking about earlier. something bad happened in haiti so they must have did something bad to deserve it. but God doesn't work that way (or at least hasn't according to years of scripture and history) but i can tell reasoning with him won't do a thing.
if you guys heard of "solid ground", i think that's a pretty good example of fundamentalism.

aftershock was actually revised to 5.9. But that's still nasty.
Nut and I actually talked a bit about ironically named "solid ground".
HEY NUT! Are we doing this again next Wednesday?
