So I read a news article today claiming that a pastor in florida was planning on marking the 9-11 anniversery by burning 200 copies of the Qu'ran.

WHAT?!?! Seriously, how does that commemorate anyone? It reeks of hate mongering and completely lacks the elements of Love, Grace and Forgiveness, which are key Christian fundamentals... I can't believe that a pastor would condone nonetheless organise such a thing...

According to the article, he is now carrying around a pistol because of the death threats that he is receiving... not that I condone the death threats, but really as a pastor, when you need to start carrying a sidearm, doesn't it don on you that something is wrong here??!?!

America needs to worry less about burning quarans and worry more about burning calories.

Where are they getting 200 copies of the quran from? I'm pretty sure they're not getting them from Islamics, or hopefully not stealing them from them anyway. That probably means they're getting someone to print 200 fresh copies of the quran just to have them burnt. What does that accomplish? There will be no more or less copies of the quran in existence after they're done.... useless waste of paper.

I think people are donating them for this cause... The article says that supporters have been mailing copies of the Qu'ran to his church.

yeah i read about this a few days ago. apparently obama told him to stop but he won't. and now he's carrying a 9mm for protection (sorry if that's in the article posted, i didn't read it).

it's not a new mentality though, stems back to biblical times even. "if you're not with us then you're against us", "kill those who don't agree with us", "exclude those who don't fit in with the status quo", etc. just a few years ago we read about the pastors killing abortion doctors and signing petitions to ban same sex marriages (oops, did i say that outloud?).

the problem is that everyone has an opinion but the fundies think that their opinion is the absolute truth and that everyone has to agree with it or there's something wrong with them.

There's a trade show for everything, how come there isn't one for religion? They can have a wrestling event between the different religions for the kids.

yeah, i read that they put the burning on hold because some of the mosque builders agreed to meet jones to talk about relocating. the funny thing is that the muslim leader went on record saying that no such meeting was scheduled to take place.

*edit** i just read the article that jt linked and i guess the muslim leader did agree to meet with him. oops.

maybe it's all hearsay and now i'm just speculating, but i wonder if jones was bluffing and the muslims called his bluff. the quran to the muslims is a lot different than what the bible is (should be) for christians. the quran is actually holy and to be worshipped. the bible is just a dusty book on the shelf that no one reads (c'mon, prove me wrong).

but seriously, if someone were to take my bible and burn it, i'd just be like, that's ok, i have about 90 more on my shelf.
