from the research i was doing LED can typically produce thinner displays (as they now use a method called edge-lighting, rather than the traditional backlighting), I believe LED generally produces less heat and consumes less energy. LED is basically replacing the LCD standard, because they can produce thinner, more efficient displays with the same quality in terms of sharpness, mid-to-high range LCD/LED will have other technologies to improve handling of fast motion and increase color/contrast to compete with plasma.
Plasma has always provided the best color, contrast and handle fast motion the best. I think previously they did not provide as sharp an image as LCD/LED. But that may have changed now. They produce more heat.
in terms of price LED is the most expensive, Plasma and LCD are about the same.
