preach from behind pulpit/stand or walk around with notes?

for the past year and a bit i've been preaching in front of the pulpit. i'd wander around and just say what i need to say. i know there are theological (and some practical) reasons for preaching from behind, and some prefer that.

what do the general populace think? or does anyone even care?

i like it when the speaker preaches from the floor and not hide behind the pulpit... it seems more personal especially when they don't need to look down and read their sermon word for word
