Who in this modern day and age uses that lame phrase anymore, let alone at a huge mainstream media outlet like ESPN? It's obvious that he used that phrase as a slur.

"chink in the armour" in itself isn't racist. Considering the context though, it was viewed as racist.

Sort of like that banana peel incident where someone threw a peel on the ice when that black guy slipped up.

it wasn't smart, for sure, but it's still a valid expression. i think the guy who said it should have been reprimanded just for being an idiot, but firing him might have been extreme.

I'm sure he was trying to be "smart", but ended up being offensive.
I agree he shouldn't have been fired for it though.

for example, a password that my inlaws gave me was a combination of the first two letters of both their names, with patrick's going first. guess what the password is? lol.

I think he was just trying to be cute. He just wanted a catchy headline. Surely he wasn't stupid enough to think he'd get away with making racist comments. He had nothing to gain and everything to lose.

IMO, nothing more than an apology should have been necessary. Then again, I'm not the one being targeted.

"chink in the armour" to me would refer to some sort of weakness in defense. Turnovers are when the players lose the ball while dribbling the ball up on an offensive rush. If it wasn't meant as a racist pun, then the phrasing would actually make no sense.

But Lin wasn't a weakness in the defense. I'm gathering this from the subheading in that screenshot where it says "Jeremy Lin's 9 turnovers cost Knicks in streak-snapping loss to Hornets". Although I understood the meaning, the use of this phrase would've been a stretch if it weren't for the fact that he was using "chink" as a racial slur pun.

Turnovers are an offensive failure, not a defensive failure.

More appropriate headings would've been like "Can't pull trigger", or "Lin shot down", or "Hoop Dreams".
If Lin were in defense and he failed to block shots or didn't apply enough pressure to the opposing offense, then that phrase would've been perfect.
