you'd be surprised how many cashiers rely on the display on their tills.
try this:
go to any retailer that employs young people.
buy something.
after the total comes up, and you hand the cashier money at a whole dollar, and wait for them to punch it in.
when your change total comes up, offer to make it easier by giving some change to round it down or whatever.
wait for them to figure out wtf you're talking about.
more often than not, they'll either say no, or start the whole thing over with the till. because the till always did the work for them, they can't think abstractly anymore.
