how many threads have been locked over the past few days? lol

seems like anytime anyone writes "ibtl" the thread gets locked even though their reply is on topic and not rude...

lets test this theory out...

ibtl...

wait for it....
i really should be working

haha, it's your fault.
every time you put ibtl the thread has been locked.
i've put ibtl in lots of threads that remained open.

I can start locking threads that go off topic, but then 80% of the screen would be locked threads.

OK... starting now, Shaun and I will start locking threads that go off topic.

Better yet, I'll start deleting posts that are irrelevant to the Topic title.

are you serious?
lol
off topic threads are the point of an off topic forum. the locked thread in the parent's forum was a good call because that was off topic. this, however is the off topic forum. it's about the mindless chatter/banter.

I think the purpose of Off Topic subforums are actually supposed to be topics that are off from the main forum topic. Like, if it was a car forum, then Off Topic subforums are meant for talking about stuff not related to cars.

If an Off Topic subforum means that all threads can go off topic, then that just creates the craziness that you see here.

of course we could try our best to make threads not on topic and see if you'd give up locking threads because there are too many to lock.. lol

i think the tough thing will be that because we have 2 mods that actually are like a quarter of the entire population of the board, by what criteria are you going to base "on topic" and "off topic"?
sure, there are the one word replies that people like to throw in for post count reasons, but to be honest i believe that all of my posts (with the exception of those in the hockey forum, which i've stopped) were definitely ON topic. many of you beg to differ because you don't like my post count.

to say that everything has to stay on topic is to put a damper on conversation.

case in point, the "interest on the rise" thread should have been locked ages ago. rebates, rentals, etc although relate to the topic at hand, aren't the actual topic as stated by the op.

what i'm saying is that there is a fine line between what is on topic and what isn't. with only two mods calling these kinds of shots then some people could get miffed. and i say this because this is what happened to me as one of the mods on the original amgforums. i was deleting posts that i felt were inappropriate and off topic, and people got irritated.

but then, it's just a forum and i guess i should probably be working anyway.

I agree... even though I came up with the definition of the Off Topic forum, I think there should still be some flexibility.

That being said, I think being off topic is one thing and thread jacking is another. If a thread goes off topic a bit, it's fine, but if a thread is outright jacked, then it's not fair for the thread's OP. Like my thread asking if anyone can puppy sit got jacked then locked, although I admit that I did have part in that as well. It's just easy to get carried away sometimes, but I guess that's where the moderation comes in...

This being a friendly forum for just a few of us, I say we just talk about it some more to get things cleared up.

that's my point as well though.
to know the intent of each thread then is to talk to the op since, as we all can see, not everyone on this forum is all that eloquent.

there needs to be room for the conversation to flow. if not, then half the posts in this thread alone should be gone. none of this really has anything to do with the number of threads that have been locked in the past few days or ibtl.

post deletions should have its own thread then by all rights.

oops, that last post was in reference to jay's post, not gordon's.

although i agree with what gordon is saying as well. intentional thread jacking is annoying when it has nothing to do with the topic at hand. but it also depends on the topic at hand as well.

if all topics were just serious then half the topics in this forum wouldn't even be around.

Your both right, and that's why for the most part, threads were allowed to run with limited locking before the page dominace frenzy began.

With no intention of picking on anyone.... "What's going on in here?" isn't really post worthy or relevent.

This thread now has been given some flow to it and if we were going to move to a hard and fast black/white policy, it would've been locked already as Nathan has pointed out.

We're just trying to tighten up the Grey.
