If you hadn’t guessed by now yet, we are a God fearing family, and it is our intention to raise our daughter in the same manner. We are members of a Lutheran Church, New Life Chinese Lutheran Church to be precise. The challenge however, is that before Coleen came over to our church, she attended an Alliance church, so much of her early development took root there. Over on that side of the pasture, infant baptism is view upon much like the Baptist Church, it just isn’t done. She was raised to put a lot of weight on the human commitment side of the act. Thus requiring full comprehension and then full immersion by the individual being baptized. This provided an interesting dilemma for us, as I had my foot firmly planted (maybe 75% planted) on the side of infant baptism. Personally, I’ve flip flopped on the issue several times already in my own spiritual life, and most recently, Nathan, a friend / nerd / pastor, had put me back on the pro side of said issue… well, 75% anyways. I understood the theology behind it. I guess the easiest way to explain it is how it was told to me by Pastor Eddie, the pastor who baptized me waaaaaaay back in the day.
Child dedication emphasizes the human response to God’s blessings of children. Baptism, on the other hand, emphasizes God’s gift of salvation.
We discussed it over and mutually decided to go ahead with the Child Dedication and imposed upon Pr. Eddie to officiate for us. It was an imposition because despite our decision to ‘Dedicate’, NLCLC is still a Lutheran Church, and they have no liturgy for Child Dedication, only for Baptism. Pr Eddie went out on a limb for us and we are most appreciative. Thank you again sir.
