so i need to get this off my chest.
last friday i was completely swamped at work. just when i couldn't be busier, someone calls the church giving a sob story of not having enough money for food and gas. his job of delivering stuff doesn't pay well enough to cover the gas it takes to get out to surrey and actually deliver stuff. i told him that i wanted to help but was literally too busy to even leave my desk for 5 minutes (the convo took 10 minutes, btw). i gave him the number to another church nearby and hung up. not even a minute later the phone rang again. i figured it was him again so i just ignored it.
fast forward to today. he calls back and tells me that i never got back to him. i said i didn't have a number to get back to. anyway, he fed me the same story about needing money for gas and food and so i told him what i tell all people looking for handouts: i'll meet him at the gas station/grocery store and buy him what he needs, but no gift cards or cash. he agreed and i met him at this shady gas station in burnaby.
everything seemed fine, he got his tank filled ($80 later) and he was joking around and stuff. seemed pretty normal. then we headed off to superstore. when we got there, he got really irate and started asking me why i couldn't get him a gift card. i said that we've been burned in the past and this is the way we help those who really need it. he got more mad and wouldn't let me get a word in. when i said "bread and peanut butter", he turned around and walked out the door. i followed him outside and watched as he walked to his car. i wanted to wait to see him leave, in case he kicks some dents into my car. he didn't leave. he sat there for a looooong time. i had to pee, so i went back inside and was actually contemplating still buying the bread and pb and give it to him in his car.
after wandering around a bit, i decided against it just when my secretary calls. she said that the guy just called the church and yelled at her. ok. i walk outside and saw that his car was gone, so i thought it's all behind us.
i walk to my car and see that he didn't actually leave. he just moved his car beside mine so he could yell at me more. and he did so. for a good 5 minutes at least. then he left.
now i'm scared he's going to come to the church to kick my car in.
what a day.
