hey nat, the movie was awesome! too bad you weren't there.. lol

yea, easily my fav marvel movie so far. i think i liked how most of the movie actually made sense as opposed to the other ones. I think it's like nathan (or at least i think it was nathan) said, the other movies leading up to the avengers seemed like they were made w/o much thought just to build up to the avengers.

Anyways, I'm glad they made the Hulk what he was in the movie. It almost redeems the character from the two failed hulk movies.

OK. so the inconsistencies that you speak of aren't as inconsistent in my interpretation. The little quip that Banner said "I'm always mad" refers back to something that might not have been explained well enough in this movie, but covered in the BAD hulk movies (Though Ed Norton's wasn't that horrible) and throughout the comic book iterations of Hulk. He isn't being inconsistent, you need to understand that the Hulk is merely a magnification of Banner's own inner emotions. So though it seemed like he was out of control and losing it when he went after ScarJo and was tearing up the command center, he genuinely was pissed off at Shield and Fury. He was never at a point yet where he actually trusted them. And Natasha was the one that "tricked" him into coming. She lied to him on three occassions prior to his first HULKING. Hulk is at the very core a creature driven by emotion, not logic. When he was Hulking, Banner was PISSED at them and he was losing control of his emotions and that carried through.

Cut to the final battle. Banner's frame of mind at this point is TOTALLY different then. At this point, his enemies are clear, Banner is not losing control to his emotions, but focusing then and relinquishing control over as he is Hulking. His is fearful and angry at Loki and the Chiauri for the invasion of his planet. His emotions are driving his energies to be allied with the Avengers now.

Anxious Banner that loses control = unpredictable Hulk, that is why he is ALWAYS struggling to maintain his emotions 24/7 (remember, he's always angry)
Banner, giving into his emotions and focusing it = Hulk with direction.

The first Hulking on the SHIELD ship, he couldn't tell friend from foe. I understand the part that his anger towards SHIELD carried through when his Hulking triggered, but he was attacking without bias... he was attacking Thor too, but Thor didn't really have any affiliation with SHIELD. I guess you could chalk it up to an uncontrolled trigger point whereas the final battle scene was a controlled trigger, but it just wasn't explained well enough to follow logically. Takes a lot of filling in the blanks on your own.

yeah so i finally watched this yesterday with my confirmation class. it was pretty good. i didn't really understand the hulk inconsistencies too at the beginning, but i guess jay's explaination up there makes sense. maybe it's all part of how the avengers didn't have focus before, which is why they lost, but then after that agent guy died (i actually thought he was going to end up not dead, maybe we'll see him in the sequel), they all came into focus, including hulk as hulk.

i guess they were using the hulk to show the difference between unbridled rage for the sake of rage vs. focussed rage with a purpose. also it could be the controlled anger thing. on the shield ship he lost control, so he was so mad at everything that he couldn't help it and had to smash everything, while in the final battle he said he's always angry (but controlled) and he just allowed his anger to come out to the forefront, still giving him the control over his actions.
