Americans and their handguns

Postby Duncan » Thu Aug 09, 2012 8:54 am

Some american cop who took a trip to calgary felt strange to be w/o his handgun and decided to write in to a canadian paper about it?

Just goes to show you why Canadian mass shootings are far and few between compared to crazy americans.

Lesson learned. Don't ask for directions when visiting the US.

someone should find those two guys and hear what they have to say about the situation. it'd be hilarious if they were planning on robbing them.

haha honest mistake my ass. maybe he didn't have any malicious intention with the gun in canada, but there's no way that he didn't know he had one on him.

it boggles my mind how americans think that carrying a gun is as normal as carrying your wallet or keys... only in the states, and countries in war/turmoil do people carry guns around like it's nothing... pretty much all 1st world countries leave the firearms to the military/police...

In Japan, they have super strict gun control laws, plus their culture just doesn't like guns in general.

http://www.theatlantic.com/internationa ... hs/260189/

In 2008, America had 12000 gun related homicides, and Japan had 11. Even given the population size difference, that's still a pretty staggering delta.

japan's strict gun laws could also be because of the history during the meji era when they outlawed carrying swords in favour of adapting the western way of thinking that only military and law enforcement should be allowed to carry weapons. Back then, japanese carrying katanas could probably be seen as an equivalent to today's american carrying a hand gun. There was a lot of resistance to the law and as a result, many samurais were imprisoned or killed because they refused to give up their swords.

anyways, enough of a history lesson...

i think it's a variation of the chicken and the egg scenario... if people weren't allowed to carry guns freely, then there wouldn't be as big of a need to carry a gun to protect yourself... if you really wanted to protect yourself, then take up martial arts haha...
