Laptop or desktop as main computer

it's almost an unwritten rule that you don't upgrade to any microsoft software until the second release of it comes out... like xp sp2 or win7 r2... microsoft always gimps up the first release and fixes the major gaffs in the second release

i guess that goes with cars too. never get the first year of a new generation/platform, wait a couple years and have them work out the kinks.

You only need to upgrade if there is a need. Didn't use Vista at all. Only upgraded to win7 cuz i got the action pack, and support was stopping for xp. However Win8 is looking pretty good if you have some kind of touch screen device.

just going back to the original discussion, even tho' i suggested a new desktop for G. i am currently thinking about getting a new laptop myself for my main pc.

i've been using my work laptop as my main pc, but since tomorrow is my last day and i'll have to return it. going to get one to replace it. i just can get over the mobility. but then again i basically have no space for a stationary desk to work on at home.

no for gaming i've been basically using my htpc. but that means i can't really game if joyce is watching tv. my work laptop has crap for a video card.

what do you mean by "someone with your needs?"

a tablet just wouldn't do powerwise for me. i need to do development work on whatever machine i use (a lot of typing), and i may need to be running a local web server or database server on it, etc...
