Morons.... Both Security Guards and Police really need to be reminded of just where their authority ends. If the kid decides to sue, he will easily win. There have been a kajillion cases like this in the last decade and almost everytime, the police have lost the case and had to issue a public apology.

i read some of the comments on the article and some of those guys seem to know what they're talking about. although the police and security were acting a bit over the top, the kid was in the wrong for taking the second picture after he was asked to stop. the kid admits to swearing, so he probably came in with this "f#ck you" attitude, which was probably amplified with the toy cop's reactions to his first photo.

either case, i see millions of tourists taking pictures in the mall. albeit usually of their friends in front of the coach or apple stores, but no one seems to care about that.

one guy said that it's private property (which was also refuted, however), and the first picture was ok because there are no signs explicitly saying that you can't take them. but once the security guards told him to stop, he shouldn't have taken the second one as he was leaving. made sense to me.

What struck me as overly stupid on the part of the security guards was that they asked the kid twice to delete the pictures... on a film camera.

either case, it could have been a different security guard and either of them might not have known that it was a film camera.

Oh, the RCMP asked too? I thought the RCMP would've known better than that, after the other cases of improper camera/picture destruction that they've been through.

i'm assuming he was using an slr, which isn't obviously distinguishable to dslrs at quick glance.
but hey, i'd think if you saw anyone take a picture quickly that you'd think it was digital too. i mean really, who still uses film on a regular basis?

If the RCMP thought that deleting the pictures was a legal request, then wouldn't they have done it themselves without asking? Instead of asking the kid to do it himself?

But seriously... it's not like every square inch of that mall isn't taped anyway.
